A MULTISECTORAL COMMITTEE ON CHEMICALS MANAGEMENT ESTABLISHED IN KENYA

Nairobi, 15th February 2021: Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD) our project partner in Kenya participated in the launch of the Multi-sectoral Committee on Sound Chemicals Management (MSCSCM)[1] in Kenya.

The committee aims to support implementation of the Kenya National Chemicals Policy by working on a systematic and coherent framework for sound chemicals management and provide overarching approach and strategies that facilitate linkages between different sectors. The committee comprises of the various institutions and organizations drawn from government, civil society and the private sector. CEJAD is among the members of the committee, representing the civil society.

The launch took place took place on 15th February 2021 at a Nairobi hotel and was presided by the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Kenya.

The main functions of the committee are to:

  • Promote collaboration and partnerships among the stakeholders
  • Promote awareness and advocacy on sound chemicals management
  • Promote data collection, analysis and information sharing and knowledge management to inform decision making
  • Promote capacity building among the chemical’s management stakeholders
  • Prepare joint multi-sectoral project concepts and implementation of activities
  • Regular sharing of public awareness and information
  • Coordinated approach to national topical issues of concern

Other members include the following institutions; Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries – state department of fisheries and blue economy, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure – Material Testing and Research Division, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection – department of Occupational Safety and Health, Government Chemist Department, National Environment Management Authority, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Kenya Bureau of Standards and The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

MCSCM organizes its first meeting after Launch to prepare its Action Plan

Nairobi, 15th June 2021, CEJAD represented by Griffins Ochieng attended and participated in the meeting of the Kenya’s national multisectoral committee on sound chemicals management (MSCSCM) to develop an action plan for the committee.

CEJAD’s Griffins Ochieng as a member of the committee actively participated in meeting, and facilitated the session on development of the action plan. Griffins further presented and introduced in the committee meeting the online courses developed for the SAICM resource platform on the various topics of discussion in the post 2020 SAICM framework including Issues of Concern, Highly Hazardous Pesticides among others.
